Domain I. Content Knowledge and Instructional Goals

Strengths: One of my goals as a band director throughout my teaching career was/is to find relevant and quality repertoire for teaching purposes and also for using the repertoire to showcase the students’ musicianship at their level. I also strive to help students to be disciplined and actively engaged in the process of making music by holding them accountable and responsible for the outcome of the product. These goals also transfer to other aspects of academic and social life.

Evidence: The growth of our program, both numerically and artistically over the past 8 years and also our performances.*(see program growth)

Areas for growth: Establishing a strong platform for a solid understanding of music theory, which will benefit the pace of learning and understanding process.

Domain II. Supporting Student Learning

Strengths: Our students come from various environments and backgrounds, and we as educators have a high calling to bring all these students to a special place everyday for a few hours. I believe that mutual respect and trust between the director and the students is an essential key to success of any group or ensemble. My goal is to make students feel comfortable in my environment and and to give them the ability to explore their craft to full potential. The pathway of our program and the opening of three levels in every wing of our program has set new standards and specific goals for students to attain.

Evidence: We have ensembles comprised of students of different grades, abilities and backgrounds and students feel safe and welcome in my classes. Three levels of ensembles that students can be part of through reaching specific performance goals.

Areas for growth: I would like to improve communications to parents right away when needed, so the parents are aware of any deficiencies that students might have artistically or socially.

Domain III. Monitoring and Assessing Student Performance

Strengths: I assess students weekly through individual playing tests and also music theory tests to see their individual progress. We also have sectional rehearsals where students are being assessed in a group setting, reflecting on the strength of their own section/instrument. Our groups spend time recording rehearsals evaluating/critiquing our performances, where each student brings constructive criticism of our rehearsal/performance with comments for things that we do well, and aspects that we need improvement.

Evidence: Concerts, performances, rehearsals and individual tests. We listen, talk and make future plans.

Areas for growth: Find other ways of assessing students besides our traditional ways.

Domain IV. Professional Development and Growth

Strengths: My philosophy is built around a good rapport with the students, teachers and parents. I believe that integrity and respect are two essential aspects of any community. This is something that I’ve tried to convey over the past eight years I’ve been working with students, parents and staff at NCS. I’ve always been an advocate of mutual respect, in order to make students feel safe and trustworthy of one another, both socially and artistically.

Evidence: Meetings and e-mails with parents and students resolving personal or group issues/incidents. One on one student support relating different aspects.

Areas for growth: I would like to continue my professional growth being involved in state-wide music conferences and seminars/workshops to further develop my artistic and professional growth. I would also like to invite colleagues to observe my teaching practices and receive feedback to improve my professional development.

Domain V. Academy Life and Culture

Strengths: I’ve been involved in outside school and community events since I was hired in 2007. Show Band has participated annually at Duck Pluck, Natomas Community Day, Program Outreach to different elementary/middle schools in the community and also performing for Teacher of the Year conference in Downtown, including other invitational performances, and fundraisers at Red Lion Hotel. Show Band, Concert Band and Symphonic Band had participated in Magic Music Days biannually at Disneyland, and also Music in the Parks Festivals biannually.

Evidence: Trophies, Plaques and Certificates of recognition.

Areas for growth: Being more involved in exploring different opportunities for performances for all levels of ensembles, including community performances, fundraisers, festivals and competitions.
